Players must stick together, urges Bolton Wanderers midfielder Medo

Wanderers midfielder Medo believes manager Dougie Freedman has the strength of character to turn around the team’s fortunes and admits the players need to shoulder some blame for the disappointing results this season.

The Sierra Leone international has been a regular fixture in the team with 29 appearances this campaign.

And he is just as disappointed as anyone with the team’s return of 30 points from their 31 Championship matches.

But he says there needs to be unity in the camp to reverse form that has seen the team fail to win in their last nine league outings and is backing Freedman to ensure the togetherness remains in the embattled squad.

The 26-year-old said: “I really do feel for him (Freedman) a lot. He has been working hard and pushing us.

“In most of the games we do play well, but we make simple mistakes and he is getting the criticism.

“I know he is a strong character and he will keep us going.

“Right now we are going through a hard time, but we need to stick together and if we do, I believe we will bounce back. I believe if we keep doing what we are doing right and push out the little mistakes, it will happen.

“Sometimes you have this kind of season.

“We need to be strong and we need the supporters around us.

“As players we need to keep working hard and we will get what we deserve.”

Medo has started five of the last six matches for Wanderers and while he left Millwall frustrated they could not hold on for three points on Saturday, he says it was important not to lose to another team at the wrong end of the table.

He added: “For parts of the game we had them, but they got the goal at the end and it was really frustrating.

“However, we have got to keep going.

“It is a difficult place to play, so overall I am happy we didn’t lose the game.”

It might well have been more had Wanderers’ scorer, Lukas Jutkiewicz, netted from the penalty spot to double the advantage inside the last quarter-of-an-hour.

The loan striker apologised for his miss afterwards but Medo is backing him to bounce back quickly and continue to show the form that has brought him two goals his first three starts for the Whites.

The midfielder said: “He was on top of his game and he had scored the goal, so he was sure about the penalty and took it.

“I am sure he will get over it (the miss) – he has been in these type of circumstances many times.

“It was a great goal and he is a great player. I am happy for him that he is doing well.

“To score a goal like he did shows he is a good character. I just hope he keeps going.”

Failure to hold on to a lead is costing Whites dear

Wanderers’ failure to hold on to a lead cost them dear against fellow strugglers Millwall on Saturday – and it has been something of an Achilles heel for Dougie Freedman’s side this season.

The Scot was again satisfied with his team’s overall display at The Den, citing profligacy up front as the main reason his side did not get a much-needed three points.

Certainly, a successful penalty conversion from Lukas Jutkiewicz 13 minutes from time could have led to a different outcome after the loan striker had opened the scoring with his second goal in three matches.

But the boss must be concerned his side still look incapable of holding a lead.

Freedman has been pleased with the way his side have started recent matches; going 2-0 up at home to Bournemouth and even being the dominant side against high-flying Burnley a week ago before being caught by a sucker-punch.

But it is not so much the starts as the inability to build on those early exchanges that have let down Wanderers.

In two of their last three matches, they have been in charge only to walk away with a solitary point – something of a recurring theme.

The Whites have taken the lead in 13 of their 31 Championship matches this season but gone on to win just six. In the other seven, they have drawn six and lost once – at Brighton, when they let a 1-0 lead slip to lose 3-1 in September.

Five of those draws have been on home turf, where they have dropped 10 points from winning positions against Reading, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich and that recent 2-2 draw with Bournemouth, though the Derby clash actually saw the Whites rescue a point with an equaliser after going 2-1 down.

It is a trend Freedman will hope to end with back-to-back home games on consecutive weekends against Watford on Saturday, and then in the derby clash with Blackburn on March 1.

Scoring more goals to reflect the positive starts needs to go hand in hand with a defensive stubbornness to protect a lead.

The boss has regularly stressed the need to eradicate individual mistakes and play for the full 90-plus minutes.

And home turf has been where the problem has maninfested itself.

Their home defensive record is only bettered by three other teams in the bottom half of the table, the odd goal usually being the reason for not registering more than two victories from their 15 Reebok dates.

But when they do concede, as they have in 14 of those 15 home matches, they need to fire at the opposite end.

And only three teams in the entire division (Blackpool, Charlton and Yeovil) have scored fewer goals on home turf than Wanderers’ tally of 18.

In contrast, the six times Bolton have scored first on the road have yielded four of their six league wins – one of those coming against this weekend’s opponents Watford.

If they can transfer that sort of form to home soil, it would certainly help the nervousness on and off the pitch in the remaining eight matches at the Reebok.

U21s: Spurs 2-5 Bolton

IN BRIEF

Georg Iliev hit a hat-trick as Wanderers’ under-21 side overcame a two goal deficit to run out 5-2 winners over ten-man Tottenham Hotspur on Monday afternoon.

The hosts had raced into an early lead courtesy of goals from Souleymane Coulibaly and Shaquile Coulthirst, but Tom Youngs and Chris Lester drew the Whites level in the second period.

Not satisfied with a point however, substitute Iliev hit a six minute treble inside the last 15 minutes of the game to secure all three points for Wanderers.

FIRST HALF

During the opening five minutes Bolton started the game with a good tempo, with Luke Woodland getting beyond his marker to head into Jordan Archer’s hands before Zach Clough ensured that Spurs keeper was on his guard with a well taken shot.

The early opportunities appeared to wake Spurs up and with ten minutes gone, Harry Kane enjoyed a mazy run but ultimately failed to test Jay Lynch in the Bolton goal.

Just a minute later however and the hosts appeared to have taken the lead through Coulthirst, but the winger was judged to be offside to Wanderers’ relief.

Hayden White was next up to cause problems in and around the Spurs area, with his low cross from the right flank on the quarter hour mark narrowly evading the advancing Bolton attack.

Settling into the game, Wanderers were dealt a blow a matter of minutes later as Lynch committed himself to a cross but unfortunately came off badly, with under-18 shot stopper Harry Campbell replacing him between the sticks.

Sadly for the youngster though, his first action was to pick the ball out of the net when a pinpoint Kenneth McEvoy corner found the head of Coulibaly who put the hosts in front against the run of play.

Having broken the deadlock, Tottenham were now in the ascendancy and nearly doubled their lead as advancing defender Milos Veljkovic almost found the bottom corner with a swinging shot but his effort went wide.

Over the course of the next ten minutes, the Whites did enjoy opportunities on the break to pull a goal back with Woodland, Youngs and Sanmi Odelusi all squandering chances to equalise.

Wanderers’ inability to capitalise however left the door open for Spurs to extend their lead which they did so on the counter attack as Alex McQueen’s ball into the box met striker Coulthirst who made no mistake, finding the corner of the Bolton goal with a bullet of a header.

Rob Hall, a thorn in Spurs’ side throughout the afternoon, could have reduced the deficit from his neatly crafted powerful drive that had goalkeeper Archer beaten but unfortunately for the winger, the post was too and it went inches wide to ensure that the home side went into the break two to the good.

SECOND HALF

The second period, unlike the first, started slowly with Odelusi being the first to try his luck after a few step-overs to rile first teamer Danny Rose, but his effort went high over the bar.

Sandro Cordeiro, making his comeback from injury, had his afternoon ended prematurely after coming off second best in a challenge with Josh Vela, with Kane’s resulting free-kick failing to trouble Campbell.

Following a testing start to the half, it wasn’t until the hour mark that the first real opportunities would arise as Hall fired narrowly past the post with Archer beaten.

Under the watchful eye of each team’s respective first team managers, the game was about to be completely turned on its head as in the 67th minute as Hall broke away from the Spurs defence with defender Dominic Hall recklessly bringing down the winger and conceding a penalty in the process.

Things were to get worse for the youngster however, with the referee brandishing a red card to him as Youngs took on the responsibility of beating Archer and he did so coolly, sending the keeper the wrong way to halve the deficit.

Now dominating proceedings, Wanderers introduced Lester and Iliev into the mix – substitutes which would prove crucial inside the final 20 minutes of the clash.

With 15 minutes left, the changes made by Bolton reaped dividends as Andy Kellett found Lester who headed home past Archer to equalise for the Whites.

In the 79th minute, Tottenham’s problems went from bad to worse as the defence of their ten man side got into a tangle, with the watching faithful watching in awe as Iliev gambled and bundled the ball into the back of the net to hand Wanderers the lead.

The striker, who recently was awarded with a professional contract by the club, continued to flourish and moments later unleashed an audacious drive which flew past Archer, with the flat footed Spurs defence only able to stare in disbelief as the Bulgarian wheeled away to celebrate.

Three minutes later, Hall, the man who started the comeback by winning the penalty, beat his man and found the force and desire of Iliev, with their link up ensuring that the forward completed his hat-trick to send the Bolton bench into raptures and secure a memorable victory for the visitors.

Bolton: Lynch (Campbell), Threlkeld, Kellett, White, Bolger, Vela, Odelusi, Woodland, Clough (Lester), Youngs (Iliev), Hall

Tottenham: Archer, A McQueen, Rose (Stewart), Veljkovic, Ball, Fryers, McEvoy, Sandro (Lameiras), Coulibaly, Kane (McEneff), Coulthirst
