The MLS club have made contact with the player and his representatives over a move before the start of the season on March 8.
Dougie Freedman denied that there had been a bid made by Union at the start of the week and manager John Hackworth admits the club are investigating other options.
Knight has spoken in the past about moving to America to see out his career but Freedman suggested that his defender may have had a change in heart over recent months, and could be looking towards taking his coaching badges in the UK.
But after being dropped in last night’s 1-0 defeat to Burnley, the rumour mill kicked into gear again when Hackworth confirmed his club had spoken with the 33-year-old about a move.
“Truthfully, we have been in some conversations [with Knight],” Hackworth said. “But at the same time, we are looking at a lot of different countries and have vetted out many different centre back options.
“I would think it depends on how these next couple of games go and where we are. He's certainly one of the guys we’re still considering.
“We still think we need to add a potential centre-back to our roster.”
